What is J-1?

The J-1 visa offers opportunities for international candidates to travel and gain experience in the United States.
It enables foreign nationals to teach, study, conduct research, demonstrate special skills, or receive on-the-job training for periods ranging from a few weeks to several years.

Program Sponsor

Only State Department–designated sponsors (such as Columbia College) are authorized to issue the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status (Form DS-2019).

Sponsors are responsible for screening and selecting exchange visitors based on criteria outlined in federal regulations (22 CFR Part 62).

What is DS-2019?

The DS-2019, or Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status, is the primary document for administering the exchange visitor program. It allows a prospective participant to apply for a J-1 visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

The DS-2019 identifies the exchange visitor and sponsor, describes the exchange program (including start and end dates, exchange category, and estimated cost).

How to Obtain DS-2019

Designated sponsors issue the DS-2019 to participants they have screened and selected. Once issued, the participant uses the form to apply for a J-1 visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Note: Issuance of a J-1 visa is at the discretion of U.S. Consular Officers, even if you have been accepted into a program and have received your DS-2019.
